Inheritance Planning, Explained

It isn't just for the very wealthy. If you own a home, have savings, pensions or investments, or have children or other dependants, a Will, a Lasting Power of Attorney and some forward planning can make a real difference to the people you leave behind.

Everyone has a nil-rate band of £325,000. An extra residence nil-rate band of up to £175,000 may apply if you leave your home to your children or grandchildren. Anything left to a spouse or civil partner is usually exempt, and unused allowances can pass to them, so a married couple may be able to pass on up to £1 million. Inheritance tax is normally charged at 40% above these thresholds, which are frozen until April 2030.

Your estate will be shared out under the intestacy rules, which may not reflect your wishes. Unmarried partners have no automatic right to inherit, and the process can take longer and cause added stress for your family.

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) lets you choose the people who can make decisions for you if you lose the mental capacity to make them yourself. There are two types: one for property and financial affairs, and one for health and welfare.

Will writing, Lasting Powers of Attorney, trusts and some forms of tax and estate planning are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Any investment or protection advice we give as part of your plan is regulated.

We recommend a review every few years, and whenever your circumstances change, for example if you marry, divorce, have children, move home or receive an inheritance. In England and Wales, getting married normally cancels an existing Will.

Yes. Even if no inheritance tax is due, a Will and a Lasting Power of Attorney make sure your wishes are known and your family is protected. With thresholds frozen and property values rising, more estates are also being drawn into inheritance tax over time.

Yes. You can give away up to £3,000 a year tax-free, plus small gifts of up to £250 per person, wedding gifts and regular gifts made from surplus income. Larger gifts usually fall outside your estate if you survive for seven years after making them.

A whole of life policy written in trust can pay out a lump sum to help your beneficiaries meet an inheritance tax bill, without the payout itself being added to your estate.

Currently, most unused pension funds are not subject to inheritance tax. From 6 April 2027, unused pension funds and death benefits are due to be included in your estate, so it's worth reviewing how your pension fits into your wider plans.

Your Will needs to be safe and easy for your executors to find. We offer a lifetime Will storage service for a one-off fee of [£XX — confirm fee], so there's no risk of it being lost when it's needed.

Your initial consultation is free. Our Will writing fees start from [£95 — confirm current fee] for a single Will, and we'll always confirm any costs before we begin.

I certainly have the best jobs in the world, on many fronts Mum, Nana, Adviser, when im not doing all these I look forward to Friday night feet up with a glass of wine with the hubby . I love to go to the gym, walking and meeting up for our friends. With two grown up children they have certainly dropped down the pecking order of priority following the arrival of our first Grandchild Bobby.

Outside of the office I am a fan of all sports but mainly football and Manchester United which at present is a bit like watching the Stock Market – lots of ups and downs! Murphy is my Cocker Spaniel who loves his walks and cuddles and is also the office dog.
